Horse Bit Consultations

Book a comprehensive bitting consultation to find the right bit for your horse.

Bitting consultations - Horse Bit Advice

Independent bitting consultations & training

Evaluation

Firstly, we will make a pre-ridden assessment – looking at facial conformation of your horse, discussing any concerns or problems that you may be experiencing, and signs of evasion related to the bit.

The horse is then ridden in its normal tack/equipment whilst we observe, assessing for signs of evasion. This gives the rider a chance to impart as much information and feedback as possible, which helps to build a picture in order to assist the bit change.

Discussion

We will then discuss with you the key points that need to be addressed and agree a realistic aim of bit change.

We will select and explain the bit choice, fit, and guide the horse and rider through the transition to the new bit.

Finally, when we can agree that an improvement has been achieved, any recommendations will be recorded on the bitting form and the rider will be able to source the bit at the best price.

Length of consultation

Consultations are run as 1-1 sessions in hourly booked slots, depending on the horse and rider specific needs or concerns, or in small groups together.

Great fun and very informative for riders/owners and you will also learn a great deal from observing! Add cake and coffee and everyone will enjoy the day!!

Appointments last approximately 45 minutes for single bit consultation and 90 minutes for Double bridle bitting or two discipline consultation.

No horse will be rushed as every horse is different so some may be quicker to respond than others and will be given the appropriate time.

At the end of the consultation we give you a bitting form with the details discussed and suggested recommendations.

We provide details of the bit choices we and a suggested transitioning guide.

Fully independent advice

As independent consultants we have suggested retailers you may wish to use which give you a discount, or you may wish to source at the best price or second-hand.

It is important to point out that the horse will need time to adjust both physically and mentally to get the best performance and continued results.

We are really pleased with the change Gill made to our pony’s bit. We were using a universal with a lozenge for jumping and a loose ring snaffle with lozenge for flatwork. We were finding her to be very heavy in the hand and strong. As an ex driving pony (driven for a long time before being brought into work under saddle by the previous owner), Gill identified that she was actually struggling with the fact that unlike driving bits, the bits collapsed in her mouth. After changing to less collapsible bits, not only did we notice a difference in her ridden work but we noticed that she was no longer stretching her mouth as soon as you removed the bridle. She seems happier and is more rideable. When we were purchasing the bits online Gill was quick to respond to questions to ensure we were getting exactly the right thing. I cannot recommend Gill enough!

Just had a consultation with Gill, I’m absolutely thrilled at the help and advice she gave me with my bridle and selecting a new bit for me to use. The difference in the first and second ridden assessments was so pleasing and has given me the tools I need to bring my mare on even further in her ridden work after successfully completing rehab. Will be recommending and keeping in touch with our progress. X

Bitting Consultation steps

Appointment length

Snaffle Bit (single bit) Consultation approx 1 hour
Double Bridle/Two Discipline/ Bit & Bridle Consultations 1 1/2 hour

STEP 1 – Pre-Ridden assessment

Initially Gill will compile information, such as recent health checks, injury, bits tried, signs of evasion, or problems being experienced.

The horse’s facial conformation will be assessed for tongue size, top palate space, size of lips and length of bar, depth of jaw. Followed by a light palpation of areas of around the head and neck area that may be linked with a Bit or Bridle sensitivity or soreness. This time also gives the rider the opportunity to express their concerns and objectives.

STEP 2 Ridden Assessment

The horse is then ridden in its normal equipment, bit and bridle, where the signs of evasion can be observed and explained. This gives the rider time to demonstrate through the different gaits and exercises the difficulties they have been experiencing.

This then gives the background information to pinpointing the specific areas that can benefit from a bit or bridle change.

STEP 3 Change of Bit/Bridle

Gill will then select bit choices to distinguish what the horse finds more comfortable to accommodate and signals the horse responds to more easily. There will be a small number of bit changes to ascertain and evaluate which combination of mouth and cheek piece suit both the horse and the rider. This gives the rider a window to experience the differences and feel an improvement that they can build upon with training.

STEP 4 Summary

At the end of the consultation we give you your Bitting Form with the details discussed and suggested recommendations. We provide details of the bit choices we recommended and transitioning guide. As independent consultants we have suggested retailers you may wish to use which give you a discount, or you may wish to source at the best price or second-hand. It is important to point out that the horse will need time to adjust both physically and mentally to get the best performance and continued results.
